Pathology Question on ICD Codes & Referring Provider ICD Information

Milon Posted Wed 22nd of July, 2015 12:43:19 PM

In surgical pathology, for billing codes that fall under the physician fee schedule, should the pathologists ever include the referring provider ICD information submitted on their claims? My thought was that for all pathology cases, only ICD codes pertaining to the pathologist's findings should be listed. I can clarify this question further if required. Thanks in advance for your help.

Assuming these are diagnostic and not screening tests. Pathologists are allowed to code from their findings. For example- reason for the test is suspected malignancy, then the lesion excisions test results which we are required to hold and wait for the path report. So, pathologist need to code from his findings. The path report is good as it is. Hope it helps!
