Partial Colectomy with end ileostomy

Nicole Posted Fri 10th of February, 2017 11:35:42 AM
My provider is performing a partial colectomy with and end ileostomy rather than a end colostomy and I am unclear as to what the proper coding should be. Should I be coding 44143 or others have suggested that I should code 44141 with 44310. Please advise. Thank You,

CPT 44144 is for Colectomy, partial; with resection, with colostomy or ileostomy and creation of mucofistula, in which physician resects a segment of colon. The proximal and distal ends of colon are brought through the abdominal wall onto the skin as a colostomy and mucus fistula. The physician makes an abdominal incision. Next, the selected segment of colon is isolated and divided proximally and distally to the remaining colon and removed. The proximal end of colon or terminal ileum and the distal end of colon are brought through separate incisions on the abdominal wall onto the skin as an ileostomy or colostomy and mucus fistula. The initial abdominal incision is closed. According to your description of procedure CPT 44144 seems appropriate with modifier 52 (Reduced services- because in your procedure resection is not being performed).Check your documentation and bill the CPT 44144-52, if match with the documentation.
