Pain management coding question- 01991 or 01610

Georgia Posted Fri 23rd of January, 2015 16:20:49 PM

Hi! I recently started doing the anesthesia at a pain office and am responsible for coding all my cases. My question is if I have a patient supine and we are doing a shoulder injection, can I bill using 01610? It has a higher base unit than 01991.
Thanks so much!

Thanks for your question. Procedure code 01991; Anesthesia for diagnostic or therapeutic nerve blocks and injections (when block or injection is performed by a different physician or other qualified health care professional); other than the prone position requires that someone other than the healthcare professional or physician providing the anesthesia completes the injection on the patient. It is unclear if this is the case from the information that you have provided. If your group actually completed the injection on the patient, you should bill for that service instead.
