Out patient hospital consult

Nancy Posted Mon 25th of February, 2019 09:18:50 AM
Physician was called to hospital to see patient with Priapism. Patient was treated and discharged same day. Do I use the code 99221-99233 or do I use consult codes since this would be outpatient 99241-99245 with POS 22.

Hi Nancy,

For this scenario it is appropriate to use consultation codes 99241-99245 with POS 22. However, we need to check in documentation for 3 R’s, that is request, referral, and report. Feel free to ask for any further query.

Note: Following Medicare rules, if a consultation is requested, the provider should bill from code range 99201-99215 depending on new or established visit.
