Office Billing for Screening Colonoscopy

Nicole Posted Wed 24th of February, 2016 15:50:10 PM

If the patient is coming in to the office because they are planning on having a screening colonoscopy, typically the diagnosis code Z12.11 is billed. In our area, Medicare and Blue Cross do not cover office visits with this diagnosis. My question is, what does the diagnosis Z01.818 completely entail and could this possibly be a different diagnosis that could be billed for the office visit?

Z01.818- Encounter for pre-procedural examination, NOS

Z12.11- Encounter for screening colonoscopy, NOS

Yes Z01.818 can be used if your payer is denying Z12.11.
