Ocular muscle myotomy

Denise Posted Mon 11th of February, 2019 10:25:45 AM
If the surgeon just releases the inferior rectus muscle, instead of suturing at another position, do we still use the 67314? And if so, should we use modifier 52 to the lessor work involved.

As per the clinical responsibility for code 67314, recession of the rectus muscle is performed and the muscle surrounding the Tenon's capsule is dissected. Scissors and forceps are used to cut the subconjunctival areolar tissue to expose the muscle. A blunt hook or forceps are used to elevate the muscle for traction. Sutures are placed into the muscles and clamped before removing the muscles. But in above mentioned report surgeon is only releasing the muscle but not securing it with sutures. So, it is appropriate to add modifier 52 with CPT 67314.
