What is the standard billing process for Billing OB anesthesia? I have a couple of patient bills showing the MD anesthesiologist and the CRNA billing the same codes. This seems like double billing to me. What codes should be used for administration of Epidural and the MD supervision?

Hi,

Labor & Delivery—codes 01967 (vaginal delivery) or 01968 (cesarean delivery) and the appropriate anesthesia modifier should be used for the insertion and management of an epidural catheter during delivery.  Note:  For insertion only without management use codes 62322 or 62326.

When an anesthesiologist is not personally performing the anesthesia service but is directing one to four CRNAs or student nurse anesthetists, the modifier QK (for two, three, or four concurrent procedures) or QY (for one procedure) should be used by the anesthesiologist.  The corresponding CRNA claim should include a QX modifier.

Hope that helps!
