Non Tunneled Cath Removal

Cheryl Posted Tue 13th of October, 2015 09:11:30 AM

The surgeon took the patient to an ambulatory surgery center and under MAC, local anesthesia she removed a non tunneled centrally inserted port and cath. CPT states 36590 is for a tunneled removal. What code is best for removal of a non tunneled port and cath?

The work required for removal of a non tunnelled [CVC] catheter is considered, from a CPT coding perspective, to be inherent to the evaluation and management visit in which it is performed.
