No polyp found

Amy Posted Thu 20th of March, 2014 14:14:28 PM

I am coding for pathology. During a screening colonoscopy the patient had a polyp removed. The path report states;
"Ascending colon polypectomy" and the finding states "fecal material only". In cases like these, can we only list the indication as a dx? In this case it would be 88305 / v76.51.

The pathologist would normally report the diagnosis code based on the findings of the polypectomy. For colonoscopies, some payers want the screening diagnosis as well. Only your payer can tell you for certain why and what indications they require. Follow payor guidelines.
