Our practice does all of the newborn hearing screenings at a local hospital for all newborns born there, using 92586. we have recently received several denials stating payment was made to the hospital as part of the birth charges. and also, stating 92586 is not appropriate for provider to bill a technical component only in an inpatient/outpatient place of service.all of our claims go out as inpatient since they technically are an impatient at birth. any suggestions?

That's True.

Newborn hearing screening that is billed to a provider other than a contracted inpatient facility will be denied as incidental. This service is included in the facility’s case rate and will not be paid separately.
