new patient in the office (99205) and then subs admit to ICU same day

Deborah Posted Thu 11th of October, 2012 16:39:21 PM

My doctor saw a new patient in the office (99205) and then decided to admit her to the ICU and billed 99291. How do we bill both procedures, so they are both paid?

The CPT code 99291 and 99205 can not be coded together. Any one of these two can be coded and billed for the same patient on the same date by the same physician. If critical care is provided in the ICU for the first 30-74 minutes on the day then you code 99291. Critical care of less then 30 minutes total duration on the date should be reported with the appropriate E/M code instead of 99291(for your case the E/M code would be 99205).
