Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) and E&M on the same day, same patient

Luz Posted Fri 13th of March, 2015 09:57:43 AM

Is an E&M billable when performed on the same day of NCS testing both done by the same physician? I checked the CCI and it seems to be acceptable, but I want to double check with you to make sure that I am not missing anything. Also,is it accepatable for the referring physician to also be the performing physician for the NCS.

Your input is appreciated

Yes an E&M is billable when performed on the same day of NCS testing both done by the same physician. It is billable only when a significantly separately identifiable E/M service is performed in conjunction with nerve conduction study. Modifier 25 should be appended to the E/M code.
Yes, it is acceptable for the referring physician to also be the performing physician for the NCS, if NCS are exclusively performed by referring physician.
