Nephroscopy during a pyeloplasty

Leah Posted Tue 27th of January, 2015 09:45:56 AM

The surgeons are doing a robotic pyeloplasty. During the procedure, they performed a nephroscopy with a ureteroscope because the patient has a history of kidney stones. The kidney was already opened up due to the pyeloplasty procedure. They found no stone, and completed the pyeloplasty.
Would you bill for the nephroscopy, or consider it part of the procedure? Why?
Thank you!

Nephroscopy will be considered as included in pyeloplasty, since the provider had already opened the kidney and whenever an endoscopic and open procedure are performed on same anatomical structure, you should only code for open procedure. Thanks !!
