What ICD-9 code can be used when placing a PICC or entral line for the reason of...."patient needs venous access"? we have no there syigns and symptoms, just pt. needs venous access.

We use ICD-9 code 459.89 for patient who has no IV access. I hope this helps.

I also used to code 459.89 for "patient needs venous access", in my days of coding for anesthesia specialty. Usually the Px IV access (36000) goes with this.

I found an AHA coding clinic article about this. It says venous access is not a medical diagnosis. code for the underlying problem/symptom/disease patient is being trearted for.
