need code for "unburying" penis

Michele Posted Tue 29th of March, 2011 14:19:56 PM

My doc did 2 procedures where he unburied a penis. He excised tissue to free the penis, degloved it and did skin grafts. The closest code I could find was 54440. I am billing it as unlisted but my MD is questioning it. Any guidence would be greatly appreciated.

54440 is absolutely a different type of procedure and doesn't match with unburying of penis. As per me, the only acceptable code 55899 (unlisted one). As per the complexity of the procedure, your MD should convey a comparative procedure and expected fee to bill for the unlisted one.
