MRI for preoperative planning of Total joint

Jessica Posted Wed 29th of March, 2017 14:57:09 PM
Hi There! When the patients come in for an MRI of their knee prior to receiving a total knee either for preoperative planning or for the Mako would this be coded as 73721 and -52 as there is no diagnostic portion to this? I see many carriers don't allow for this but no carrier specific direction on coding.

Hi Jessica,

Pre operative planning is included in the global day charges of the major surgical procedures like TKR and is not seperately reimbursable. If the MRI knee was performed few days prior to the surgery date, you should bill CPT code 73721. You need not to bill 52 modifier.

Hope the provided information would be helpful.
