MRI Brain Perfusion Study

Deaconess Posted Thu 03rd of November, 2016 13:06:25 PM
Hi I'm hoping to get confirmation on the correct coding for an MRI perfusion study of the brain. My understanding is that the perfusion portion may not be billed separately from the MRI studies of the brain: 70551, 70552, 70553. Can anyone tell me whether or not that has changed? What about when the brain MRI is done on one DOS, and the perfusion study the next day? Below is an email I received from an employee in our Radiology MRI department. I appreciate comments, suggestions, directions. Thanks Clinically, perfusion is a very unique sequence and process. It is used for a very precise type of tumor and to evaluate for radiation necrosis. We would never consider it part of a routine brain work up nor would our radiologists. It requires extra time and work. When we were evaluating adding this service we did a lot of research to assure there was a code. The 76498 CPT code for perfusion was listed. Do you think this has changed? Or was the code there and never really worked?
