Modifier 90

Judy Posted Tue 04th of June, 2013 16:46:42 PM

We are a one physician family practice. When we send lab testing to our reference lab but we charge for it on commercial insurance do we attach modifier 90? We do not charge for Medicare, MA plans or Medicaid.

Reference (outside laboratory) When laboratory procedures are performed by a party other then the treating or reporting physician, the procedure may be identified by adding the modifier "90" to the procedure code.
Appropriate Usage
Outside laboratory, not related to, the treating or reporting physician is performing a procedure.
Inappropriate Usage
Treating or reporting physician is completing the laboratory procedure.
