Modifier 59 or 91 for different antibodies

Angela Posted Wed 22nd of April, 2020 15:49:42 PM
We are performing celiac panel tests using CPT 83516 x 4 as we are testing 4 different antibodies. What modifier would be the most appropriate to use to differentiate them, -59 or -91?

Thanks for your question.

As per the documentation, it is appropriate to append modifier 59 with CPT code.

Modifier 91 is used to repeat lab test on the same day for the same patient. During the course of a patient’s treatment, the lab provider may need to obtain subsequent, or multiple, lab test results to better monitor the patient’s condition.

Hope this helps.
