Modifier 53

? can modifier be used for panendoscopy and colonoscopy?

Due to some extenuating circumstances or those that threaten the well being of the patient the physician may elect to terminate the procedure, so in this case you can use modifier 53 with panendoscopy and colonoscopy procedures. For ASC and Hospital setting see modifier 73 and 74.

Yes - I agree with Alex. We had a patient about a month ago with whom was experiencing heart problems - the physician stopped the procedure and had to rush him to the ER.... This would be an example of mod 53.

Make sure you review your documentation to determine if Mod 53 applies, or if Mod 52 would apply. They have different circumstances between each other.
