Metatarsal head hardware (screw) removal

Kathy Posted Tue 07th of June, 2016 12:45:29 PM
Which would be the best code to use for screw removal from the 1st metatarsal head... 28022 or 20680? 20680 states removal of "deep implant". Does the metatarsal head/joint qualify as "deep"?

HI, CPT 20680 seems more appropriate as screws are deep implants (eg, buried wire, pin, screw, metal band, nail, rod or plate). CPT code states 28022 (Arthrotomy, including exploration, drainage, or removal of loose or foreign body; metatarsophalangeal joint)but as per the above scenerio no arthrotomy was performed hence cpt code 20680 is appropriate here.
