Lithotripsy w/stent placement

Kathy Posted Thu 16th of April, 2015 14:08:38 PM

Urologist performed lithotripsy for bilateral kidney stones and placed bilateral ureteral stents. Patient was seen 1 week later & both stents were removed. How should the bilateral stent removals be reported as modifier 50 is not allowed with code 52310? Would 52315 (complicated) be appropriate in this case?

Report 52310 for removal of ureteral stents. Even if there are two stents, do not append modifier -50, under either CPT or Medicare rules. Although removing two ureteral stents seems to be a clear case for modifier -50, neither Medicare nor CPT rules allow it on 52310.
