Laparoscopic Appendectomy w/ I&D and Foreign Body Removal

Nicole Posted Mon 20th of July, 2015 13:28:10 PM

The following patient had the below procedure performed:

Laparoscopic Appendectomy- CPT 44970
I & D of Periappendiceal Abscess- CPT 44900
Removal Foreign Body from Peritoneal Cavity- CPT 49402

I am confused on the CPT codes 44900 and 49402 because these are "open" procedure codes and all of the above procedures were done laparoscopically.

When I look into the codes for the I&D and FB Removal I keep coming acrossed CPT code 49406 for both procedures? Is this correct or would I need to use the above codes (49402, 44900, 44970)?

Thank You in Advance!

If the abscess and foreign body is related to inflamed appendix, than removal of foreign body and drainage of abscess is considered included in primary procedure, CPT code 44970.
