Medical Posted Fri 31st of October, 2014 11:33:54 AM

The dermatologist did a laceration repair due to a cut on the chin from falling. skin tissue was hanging from the chin. repair was done the patient got stiches. How do we code this scenario? DX 349.39?

The location of wound in your case is chin that falls under the body region face. Additionally, when you repair a laceration, you need to determine whether a repair is simple (superficial), intermediate (deeper layers), or complex and the size in centimeters of the repaired wound.

For simple repair you may pick code from range 12011-12018 depending upon the size of the wound.

For intermediate repair you may pick code from range 12051-12057 depending upon the size of the wound.

For complex repair you may pick code from range 13131-13133 depending upon the size of the wound.

Thanks !!

Thank you for the information. Would dx 349.39 be appropriate?

SuperCoder Answered Fri 07th of November, 2014 16:03:26 PM

No the diagnosis code 349.39 is used for other dural tear and is considered a disorder of the nervous system.

You should be using an open wound diagnosis code. 873.44 (Open wound of jaw uncomplicated) or 873.54 (Open wound of jaw complicated)for the laceration.

Hope this helps.
