CPT 99001: Handling and/or conveyance of specimen for transfer from the patient in other than an office to a laboratory (distance may be indicated)

Clinical Responsibility

In this procedure, a specimen for lab test is sent for analysis from the patient in other than an office to the outside testing laboratory. This also reflects the work involved in the preparation of a specimen before sending it to the outside laboratory. Typical work for "preparation of specimen" may include centrifuging a specimen, separating fluid layer, labeling tubes, filling out requisition forms, packaging the specimen for transport to lab, etc. The physician orders lab tests that will be conducted somewhere other than the office. The test is conducted and the physician receives and discusses test results with the patient or parent/guardian.
