L5-S1 Right Sided Laminectomy w/ Discectomy

Nicole Posted Tue 07th of February, 2017 15:50:25 PM
L5-S1 Right sided Laminectomy, foraminotomy and microdiscectomy was done. Would this be the 63047 or 63030? Since the discectomy was done, this is not included in the wording for the 63047, so that just leaves the 63030 (even though it states laminotomy). Please confirm.

63030 includes the laminectomy and unless you are dealing with a different level altogether, you can't combine them...

It’s not appropriate to report both for the same level...

Keep in mind...

If both a laminectomy and a laminotomy are performed on the spine at different levels, then it would be appropriate to report a separate code for each of the procedures performed.

The purpose of 63030 is to treat a herniated intervertebral disc...whereas, 63047 treats spinal stenosis.

Kindly check the diagnosis pointer for appropriate code selection.

Thank you!
