Is there a CPT code for surgical cautery procedure?

Lori Posted Tue 12th of March, 2013 14:57:51 PM

Hello,

One if our patients was bleeding under the toenail due to a toe injury (subungual hematoma). The pediatrician drained the blood from under the toenail and we were wondering if there is a CPT code for surgical cautery procedure. Please let us know if there is such a CPT code.
We thank you again for your response!

The correct procedure code is 11740 (Evacuation of subungual hematoma). The corresponding diagnosis code would be 924.3 (Contusion of lower limb and of other and unspecified sites; toe), which includes hematomas under the toenail.

As a secondary diagnosis, you may also want to report an appropriate "E" code to reflect the external cause of the injury, if appropriate.
