Good Morning, What are the latest guidelines on Incomplete Colonoscopies vs. Flex Sigs? If scheduled as a colonoscopy, but unable to advance past the sigmoid colon is it still billed as a colon with modifier? Or now is it downgraded to a Flex sig? We have several providers who are changing the coding, but we are unsure of the latest recommendations.

Hi Selina,

If a colonoscopy is scheduled, but due to some strictures or medical condition that threaten the well being of the patient; provider is unable to advance beyond sigmoid colon; As per latest recommendations it is appropriate to do down coding to a flexible sigmoidoscopy with modifier (discontinued procedure).
