Injection in scar site to relieve pain

Victoria Posted Thu 12th of September, 2019 11:49:44 AM
what is the correct cpt code to use for injection into scar site to relieve pain and to relieve swelling? Overall she is doing well. Her left index finger looks good, as expected. The right ring finger PIP joint has more swelling than I would like to see. I have recommended an injection into the scar tissue. She should continue with the night splinting as well. Risks of the injection were discussed today which include but not limited to infection, allergic reaction, and skin pigmentation changes. She tolerated the injection well. I would like to see her back for review in 4 weeks. Procedure Right Hand INJECTION/ASPIRATION, JOINT/BURSA, SML The right ring finger PIP scar was cleansed in preparation for injection. Under sterile conditions the skin and subcutaneous tissue was injected with 1ml of 1% plain lidocaine. The right ring finger scar was injected with a mixture of 1ml of kenalog and 1ml of 0.25% plain marcaine. The patient tolerated the procedure well. A bandaid was applied to the injection site.

Hi Victoria,

Thank you for your question. The appropriate CPT code to use for injection into scar site to relieve pain and swelling will be 11900 for injection and J3301 for Kenalog. Hope it helps.
