Incomplete ERCP

Amber Posted Mon 21st of September, 2015 16:26:44 PM

If physician is doing ERCP but cannot cannulate the ampullary orifice unable to access biliary and pancreatic ducts but takes a biopsy of the ampulla. Should this be coded as an EGD w/bx or ERCP with 53 modifier?

As provider initiated the ERCP procedure and discontinued due to some reason. So you should bill -53 modifier (Discontinued services) with ERCP procedure codes. Also, please provide the proper documentation with your claim form which supports the procedure and modifier.
