Incision and drainage of left breast abscess and biopsy of the tissue

Tanesha Posted Tue 09th of June, 2020 23:17:03 PM
Can I still do a biopsy procedure for this as he stated he scraped the necrotic tissue? OP Excerpt: After appropriate time-out and antibiotics were given, 1% lidocaine with epinephrine was infiltrated into the skin and subcutaneous tissues from the 4 o'clock to 6 o'clock area of the periareolar tissue in the left breast. I anesthetized the deeper tissues and then made an incision in there and drained out the purulent material. Cultures were obtained. Then, we scraped away all the necrotic tissue and fibrinous tissue that was in there, close to the nipple. I irrigated out the wound with bacitracin irrigation and then packed.

Hello Tanesha,

Hope you’re doing well!

Thank you for your question.

As per the above documentation, biopsy will not be reported separately along with I&D procedure for the left breast abscess.

Per NCCI edits, if a biopsy is performed and submitted for pathologic evaluation that will be completed after the more extensive procedure is performed, the biopsy is not separately reportable with the more extensive procedure. Also, the biopsy is not separately reportable if used for the purpose of assessing margins of resection or verifying resectability.

Hope that helps!
