In Patient Psychiatrist visit billing

Melissa Posted Thu 26th of July, 2018 15:28:34 PM
Hello, I am new to Psychiatry Billing. We have a Psychiatrist and a Psychologist that visit patients in in-patient facilities to provide services e.g 90792, 90837.....they see the patients daily...how do I bill for these services...They are professional services in an in-patient setting....Do I bill on a HCFA or UB? Do they have to be billed monthly or can they be billed daily? Any assistance would be very much appreciated

Professional services performed by physicians, surgeons, psychiatrist, psychologist, physical therapist, occupational therapists and other health care providers in inpatient or outpatient setting are billed under HCFA 1500 form. Hospitals, SNF and other institutions bill for their services under UB-04 form.

Billing of codes depends on code to code basis. CPT code 90792 is used only once per day regardless of the number of sessions or time that the provider spends with the patient on the same day.

Other provided CPT code 90837 is time-based code and specific to psychotherapy services performed for 60 minutes with the patient. There are other set of codes for 30 minutes and 45 minutes.

You can bill the services either way, one service code at a time for a single date of service on a single claim form or you can bill multiple date of service (DOS) codes on a single claim form.
