Implanted K-wire Removal x3

Camille Posted Thu 14th of November, 2019 17:04:42 PM
Indication for hardware removal, left wrist: Post scaphoid excision with 4-corner fusion, and painful hardware. Procedure Note excerpt: "Sharp dissection with a 15 blade, blunt dissection with tenotomy scissor and Ragnell retractor. The tendon was retracted. Dissection was carried out down to the level of the hamate where the implant was identified, grasped and withdrawn under direct visualization. Thus hardware removal left wrist, separate skin and fascial incision was completed." Two more separate site excisions are described, removing hardware from the capitate and carpus as well. Can this be coded with 3 units of 20680 due to separate excisions and different bones of the wrist? Or only one unit of 20680 due to being removed from the same fusion for the same injury? Thank you very much!

Hi Camille,

Thanks for your question.

Since Code 20680 has MUE of 3, it may be reported 3 times in a day if different implants are removed from different sites. Now since these bones are at the same joint and an implant is removed from that joint, you should report only single unit of this code.
