I&D of an abcess

Deborah h Posted Fri 03rd of April, 2015 20:09:55 PM

If an old scalp incision was reopened to debride, irrigate, and drain an abcess with a catheter;then suture closed; how would this be coded?

SuperCoder Answered Mon 06th of April, 2015 05:04:00 AM

Kindly provide more information. Is this a dehiscence wound? There are separate codes for treatment of wound dehiscence (12020/12021). Also, you can bill CPT code 10061 for incision and drainage of complicated abscess.

No, this wound wasn't dehiscence; the wound was incised and drained with a catheter; flushed with bacitracin and closed. Please advise.

CPT code 10061 is the most appropriate code that fits this scenario.
