ICD-9 Papillary Breast Lesion

Julia Posted Tue 17th of June, 2014 11:38:02 AM

What would be the proper diagnosis code for, papillary breast lesion? There isn't a breast option listed under lesion and, from my understanding, these lesions are uncertain in their behaviour. Would code 238.3 be appropriate?

Thank you for your question. I am not sure what the documentation may support, I have listed some codes below. You want to make sure you are only coding what the provider has documented. You cannot infer lesion behavior, it must be what is stated by the provider.

217-Benign neoplasm of breast (without knowing more, I would lean towards this diagnosis)

611.89-Other specified disorders of breast

238.3-Neoplasm of uncertain behavior of breast
