Is there an ICD-9 code for "cutting" as in psychological "cutting"? One of our pediatricians examined a patient who has been cutting herself. We have checked the ICD-9 code book but we could only find 879.8 (wound, open), which may be vague for this type of diagnosis. Please let us know if there is a more appropriate ICD-9 code. We thank you!

Hi Lori,

Unusual case. I would also go with 879.8 (because of cutting)but add an E-Code E956 also which will cover the scenario.

This will cover self-inflicted injuries specified as intentional
