ICD-9 code

E. maria Posted Fri 08th of May, 2015 02:02:59 AM

Patient underwent multiple debridements for soft tissue infection of abdominal wall and scrotum. Now is taken back to surgery for irrigation of open wounds with layer closure, 30 cm abdominal wall CPT 12037 and 8 cm scrotum CPT 12044. My system rejects claim stating ICD-9 codes do not support this service. I am using the same ICD-9 as I did for the debridements 682.2 686.8, 608.4. What is the proper ICD-9 for the closure of the open wound?

Well, your system might be rejecting the ICDs because, CPT 12037 and 12044 are the codes for wound repair, so along with the cellulitis and infection codes you can map the CPT 12037 and 12044 with open wound ICDs of abdominal wall and scrotum i.e. 879.2 and 878.2 respectively. Please check you documentation if the infection is due to delayed treatment or healing tends to lead to infections, which then qualifies as a complicated open wound i.e. 879.3 for abdominal wall and 878.3 for scrotum.
