Hi,

use ICD-10 code S46.21 stands correct for the chronic biceps tear.

Thanks!

It seems there would be an M code for a chronic (greater than 3 months) biceps tear. So if the patient has operative repair of the old injury, would the A be appended due to active care or the S due lingering issues of the old injury?
SuperCoder Answered Tue 27th of September, 2016 09:18:00 AM

No, the suggested code series S46.21 is appropriate for the above scenario. M code is for spontaneous rupture, not for chronic bicep tear.

Use appropriate diagnosis code from below mentioned codes accordingly:

S46.211 (Strain of muscle, fascia and tendon of other parts of biceps, right arm)

S46.212 (Strain of muscle, fascia and tendon of other parts of biceps, left arm)

S46.219 (Strain of muscle, fascia and tendon of other parts of biceps, unspecified)

If patient came first time for visit then append A.

If it is a subsequent visit then append D.

If above mentioned condition is the consequence of a previous disease or injury then append S.

Hope this will help!

What would be the M series for chronic rupture of biceps? I'm trying to code for the biceps repair. So in the above scenario, is A or S appropriate?
SuperCoder Answered Thu 29th of September, 2016 08:08:46 AM

Appropriate codes for chronic biceps tear are:-

M66.321 - Spontaneous rupture of flexor tendons, right upper arm .

M66.322 - Spontaneous rupture of flexor tendons, left upper arm .

M66.329 - Spontaneous rupture of flexor tendons, unspecified upper arm

A and S placeholder are not applicable for these codes. These codes are used when tear is not acute,

If condition is acute then use above mentioned  S series codes.

Thank you for the codes regarding chronic spontaneous biceps rupture. When the patient has had a traumatic biceps injury, and greater than 3 months later the surgeon repairs it, which would be correct S46.211-S46.219 with A or S or M66.321-M66.329?
SuperCoder Answered Tue 04th of October, 2016 07:49:31 AM

ICD code series S46.211-S46.219 is for strain of muscle and code series M66.321-M66.329 is for rupture of flexor tendons. Therefore the correct code for traumatic biceps injury is S46.201.

If patient comes for the first time then append A.

If above mentioned condition is the consequence of a previous disease or injury then append S.

Also, if there is a fresh question then kindly report it under separate thread.
