ICD 10 and left & right

Karen Posted Thu 01st of October, 2015 12:58:59 PM

This may seem like a silly question but since the ICD 10 codes are specific to left and right will it be any kind of problem with carriers if we put the RT or LT modifier on the Procedure code? Will that be a problem in the future?

Thanks for your question. You should use the appropriate ICD-10 codes based on the diagnosis and specific to laterality. This is used in addition to RT,LT, and 50 modifiers as your payer policy requires. There has been no guidance provided that states that these modifiers are no longer required due to ICD-10 implementation. Hope this helps.
