How to code when the intended procedure changed based on findings

Anna-Marie Posted Wed 04th of February, 2015 16:12:07 PM

What is the correct way to code if an EGD with PEG placement was the intended procedure, but PEG placement could not be carried out due to physical findings detected during EGD, and instead biopsies were carried out for incidental findings in the stomach?

Thanks for your question. You should code based on what your documentation states which would be an EGD with biopsy. In this case, the provider did complete a procedure even though it was a different procedure.
