Hospital Specimen Collection and Storage

Kelly Posted Thu 03rd of October, 2019 14:47:00 PM
Is there a facility CPT the hospital lab may charge the patient for storage of the patients lab specimen until testing is provided on that specimen. Ex. Genetic testing.

Hi Kelly,

Thank you for your question.

There is no exact CPT code to bill for storage of the patients lab specimen. However, we can bill CPT 99001: Handling and/or conveyance of specimen for transfer from the patient in other than an office to a laboratory (distance may be indicated) which will include the storage as well.

Hope it helps.

Just to be clear, our facility will not be transporting the specimen, just storing it until we test it. For this scenario, the hospital lab cannot charge a CPT for just storing the sample, correct? Our Lab contact states CPT 81479 can be used when the specimen is stored for genetic testing...not true?

Hi Kelly,

You are right, it will not be appropriate to bill CPT 81479 (Unlisted molecular pathology procedure) for just storing specimen. However, CPT 81479 is build for pathology procedures for which there is no code available.
