Hemostasis of Ruptured Ovarian Cysts

Chelsey Posted Thu 31st of October, 2019 10:52:36 AM
I'm looking for a CPT code for hemostasis of ruptured ovarian cyst during a cesarean section. DX is bilateral ruptured ovarian endometriomas. Thank you

Hi Chelsey,

As per CCI edits, control of bleeding during an operative procedure is generally considered an integral component of a surgical procedure and is not separately reportable. Even though the anatomical location of cyst (ovarian cyst) is slightly away from the surgical field, surgeon needs to ensure hemostasis of the complete surgical field. Provider would perform hemostasis of the entire surgical area which includes ovary as well and hence would be considered as an inclusive service.

Having said that, there is another way to get additional reimbursement for hemostasis of ruptured ovarian cyst. Provider should append 22 Modifier with the C-section CPT code to suggest payer that increased procedural service was performed on the billed date of service. Along with c-section, hemostasis of ruptured ovarian cyst was also performed.

Appending 22 modifier will lead to increased reimbursement.

Hope, provided information would be helpful.

Thanks!
