follow-up specialty consults during hospital stays (ICD-10 coding)

Melisa Posted Tue 03rd of November, 2015 15:43:30 PM

Good day, I would like to find out if follow-up consults by the same specialty for inpatients should be coded in ICD-10 with the initial code, or subsequent. -- ex. An orthopedist sees a patient for multiple fractures in the hospital for several days in a row until discharge. Are they all coded as initial since this is one hospital stay, or are subsequent codes used after the initial visit? Thank you

Thanks for the question.

Initial ICD-10 code is used only at the time of admission and after that visit, all followup will be coded by using ICD-10 subsequent encounter codes.
