Febrile neutropenia ? sepsis POA

Michael Posted Tue 19th of March, 2013 20:36:41 PM

I am physician adviser to my hospitals CDI team. We recently had a patient with metastatic lung ca admitted with respiratory failure and severe neutropenia secondary to ongoing chemotherapy. Broad spectrum antibiotics were started though all c/s were negative.

The debate is whether or not the code for sepsis should be used and sequenced first. The provider when queried declined the sepsis code.

I have spent much time searching for an answer and have not found one. I did see that you discussed this topic as part of an AHIMA presentation.

Can you share an opinion with me about this, Michael J Bushey, M. D.
