Exploration and Thrombectomy

Nicole Posted Thu 13th of November, 2014 15:54:05 PM

The doctor did a left groin exploration with removal of foreign body from common femoral artery as well as a thrombectomy of common femoral artery.

Would the proper coding be:

35761- Exploration
36831- Thrombectomy

Thanks for your query. Can you please share the brief description of procedure?

On the femoral artery- A small arteriotomy was made, upon doing this the wire was visualized within the lumen of the vessel. The wire was grabbed and removed in its entirety.

A thrombus was immediately visualized- Using a fogarty cath, the thrombus was removed. The proximal and distal artery were thrombectomized

You should use code 34201, Embolectomy or thrombectomy, with or without catheter; femoropopliteal, aortoiliac artery, by leg incision.

Foreign body removal will not be separately reportable and will be considered as included in thrombectomy procedure.

Thanks !!
