Excision of laryngeal nerve schwannoma

Natalie Posted Mon 17th of February, 2014 15:50:04 PM

I am unable to locate a CPT code for an excision of a recurrent laryngeal nerve schwannoma-the closest code I found is 64790-however this code is for major peripheral nerves. Do you recommend using an unlisted code 64999 and send the claim with the operative report?

For more distally located tumors in which the surgeon plans to excise the schwannoma but not any bone, you might report 64788 (Excision of neurofibroma or neurolemmoma; cutaneous nerve), 64790 (... major peripheral nerve) or 64792 (... extensive [including malignant type]).
Ask the physician which type of surgery he plans to perform to remove the tumor, and you'll be better equipped to find the right code or code range for the precertification.
