Epidural Abscess Drainage and Debridement

Nicole Posted Wed 28th of September, 2016 09:29:35 AM
Doctor did a "exploration of prior fusion" (22830). An abscess pocket was entered and pus was encountered. This was aspirated completely. Considerable time was then used to debride any necrotic tissue and to constantly irrigate the area. What would be the correct code for the drainage of the parasacral epidural abscess and debridement? Would CPT code 63267 qualify?

Exploration usually includes aspiration and irrigation. But as the documentation states that necrotic tissue was also debrided during the procedure. So, you can bill the appropriate CPT code(s) from range 110422-11047, along with CPT code 22830.
