What is the appropriate ICD-9-CM diagnosis code for a patient who uses electronic cegeretes? Unknown if nicotine substance or not.

Thanks for your question. There is no specific diagnosis for electronic cigarette use. See the 305.1;Nondependent tobacco use disorder. Tobacco dependence. Includes cases where a person, for whom no other diagnosis is possible, has come under medical care because of the maladaptive effect of a drug on which he is not dependent and that he has taken on his own initiative to the detriment of his health or social functioning.

See also 305.9;Nondependent other mixed or unspecified drug abuse
Caffeine intoxication
Inhalant abuse
"Laxative habit"
Misuse of drugs NOS
Nonprescribed use of drugs or patent medicinals
Phencyclidine abuse

You will need to know the substance that the electronic cigarette contains in order to select a specific code. Without more information on the reason why the patient presented or a definitive diagnosis/substance it is difficult to answer this question. Hope this points you in the right direction.
