EGD for clearance for gastric bypass

Jennifer Posted Thu 13th of June, 2013 16:55:26 PM

A patient was referred to us for an EGD for clearance for gastric bypass surgery. During the procedure the doctor took biopsies to rule out reflux disease and gastritis. The biopsy report came back negative. We are having a bit of a disagreement in our office as to what we can bill for this patient as far as a diagnosis. I think we can only bill for the pre-op clearance for the gastric bypass. I don't think we can bill for the gastritis or reflux since the biopsy came back negative. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

I agree with you on that. Gastritis or reflux is not an established diagnosis in your case and these have been rued out also in path.
