EEG Coding

Joshua Posted Tue 02nd of June, 2020 07:59:06 AM
Can you please lost the CPT for EEG during Spinal surgery vs EEG CPT for cranial procedure? Also, what are the new 95700-95726 series EEG codes and can they be billed/reimbursed? Answers needed: Spinal EEG CPT, Cranial EEG CPT, digital analysis CPTs for EEG. These are being performed during brain/spinal surgeries and we are having difficulty with which CPTs are appropriate.

Hi Joshua,

There are multiple ways through which EEG can be coded. It all depends on the submitted documentation.

When reporting an EEG, key factors are the length of the EEG recording and/or monitoring, whether an EEG technologist or physician or other QHCP was involved, and whether a video recording was or wasn’t made. Review or analysis and a technical summary or report is usually included.

Also, there are separate codes for EEG with extended monitoring, EEG with recording awake, drowsy or sleep state, EEG recording in coma or EEG evaluation for death.

CPT codes 95705 to 95716 should be used for EEG procedure codes involving an EEG technologist.

CPT codes 95717 to 95726 should be used for EEG codes involving a Physician or other QHCP.

CPT code 95955 should be used for EEG performed during Non-intracranial surgery (eg, carotid surgery)

CPT code 95957 should be used for Digital analysis of electroencephalogram (EEG) (eg, for epileptic spike analysis)

CPT code 95812 should be used for Electroencephalogram (EEG) extended monitoring 41-60 minutes

CPT code 95813 should be used for Electroencephalogram (EEG) extended monitoring 61-119 minutes

CPT code 95816 should be used for Electroencephalogram (EEG) including recording awake and drowsy

CPT code 95819 should be used for Electroencephalogram (EEG) including recording awake and asleep

CPT code 95822 should be used for Electroencephalogram (EEG) recording in coma or sleep only

CPT code 95824 should be used for Electroencephalogram (EEG) cerebral death evaluation only

Hope, provided information would be helpful.

Thanks!
